- iFollow Latics - Nathan Byrne discusses his new contract.
- "The fans have been great. I'm a long way from home, but I'm happy and I'm settled here." - Nathan Byrne.
- Byrne has committed to a new two-and-a-half-year deal at Latics.
After signing a new contract to keep him at Wigan Athletic until 2021, Nathan Byrne said he's ready to kick on into the rest of the 2018-19 Sky Bet Championship campaign and repay Latics' commitment to him.
"I'm delighted to get my future sorted because I've had a great time since I arrived," Byrne began.
"Last season was a fantastic achievement from everyone and now we're battling away in the Championship where we want to be.
"I'm enjoying my football and it's been important for me to get my future sorted out because nobody wants to go into the summer without a contract."
"The manager has wanted to get a new contract sorted for a while and so have I, so I'm happy it's over the line and I can kick on now."
On his time at the club so far, Byrne continued:
"My time here has had its ups and downs. The first season was tough for everyone at the club, but last year we had 99% highs.
"We've experienced highs and lows this season, but that's the same at the majority of clubs, you have your good days and your bad days, but I'm delighted to stay here and more than happy to continue.
"Promotion is the top of my list in terms of memories I've created here and the FA Cup run was fantastic.
"Doncaster was the best day I've had. Seeing the fans go crazy when we scored and the way the boys got together and enjoyed the rewards of the whole season.
"The fans have been great. I'm a long way from home, but I'm happy and I'm settled here."
On his manager Paul Cook and the season ahead, Byrne added:
"The manager has been massive for me, he's trusted me since he arrived and he's played me non-stop. I enjoy working with the manager and I can't credit him enough. It was a no-brainer.
"Going forwards, the manager hasn't changed his views on things and he hasn't changed the planm we're sticking to that. We've had some unfortunate results in the last few months, but we all believe we can kick on and get the results that we need.
"This is the best dressing room I've ever been in, everyone gets on and there aren't any groups. We're all in it together and we all fight for each other, that's all you really want as a footballer."
