Fans' Forum

Speaking on iFollow Latics ahead of his side's visit to Hillsborough Stadium to take on Sheffield Wednesday in the Sky Bet Championship, Paul Cook discussed the following...

PC on Sheffield Wednesday

"This is what we wanted last season and we’re now coming into games such as Sheffield Wednesday away and Nottingham Forest away on the back of playing the likes of Aston Villa, West Brom and Swansea, so to be involved in these sort of games against the big clubs is great.

"Sheffield Wednesday are an outstanding football club with a fan base that craves success and deserves success. Steve Bruce has taken over there now and like every manager will need time to put his imprint on the club, but they’re one of those clubs that you genuinely go on and get success because their fans deserve it."

PC on recruitment

"There’s nothing for us to announce at the moment, we’re out there looking and it’s quite obvious really where we need to strengthen so we’re working on things."

PC on Anthony Pilkington

"Within your own club you expect your supporters to know what’s going on. When we’ve had injuries like we’ve had this year, starting with Dan Burn at Rangers who was out for three months, and then the catalogue of injuries to Massey, Jacobs, Powell and Grigg, you’d expect our fans to cut us a bit of slack and I’m sure and I hope they have.

"Within that, players do eventually come back from injury and you’d expect your team to be stronger again, but while Pilks made his debut last week for 55 minutes and Michael made a cameo appearance, that was the nucleus of a team that was on a bad run, so the players deserve great credit because I thought that performance was always in them.

"It’s always easy to say we’ll have people coming back from injury to save our season, but we have to find solutions within our dressing room no matter what stage of the season we’re at. It was great pleasure for the players last week that they found all the answers."

PC on Christian Walton

"As you go through a season, especially with people like Christian, football is educational and being left out of teams is part and parcel of the game, but how you react from being left out of team is everything. Christian has reacted exactly like we thought which has been outstanding and he’s going to show everyone that he’ll be back and challenging in Wigan’s first team soon.

PC on Gary Roberts

"It’s a good dilemma to have, but football is funny because if you look at the performance last week you’d say that we can’t really change the team this week, but then you look at Michael Jacobs coming back and you want to change the team.

"They’re the decisions we haven’t had for a long time so we’ll decide what the team will be and go to Sheffield Wednesday on the back of a really strong training week. We’re delighted with numbers and the competition for places all of a sudden.

PC on Nick Powell

"He’s not fit enough to be involved tomorrow. We have to be careful with these players because Nick felt his calf a little bit yesterday which comes off the back of returning to training with the first team."
