Anthony Pilkington scored the only goal of the game as Latics continued their pre-season preparations with a 1-0 victory against Macclesfield Town in a behind closed doors friendly at the Wigan Athletic Training Centre in Euxton.
Kal Naismith and Nathan Byrne both got a valuable 90 minutes under their belts, whilst goalkeeper David Marshall donned a Latics shirt for the first time. New signing Lewis MacLeod went through his paces away from the game, training with Gavin Massey and Josh Windass, who continued their respective recoveries from injuries.
In a tightly contested game, Latics created the better chances with Michael Jacobs, Joe Garner and Cedric Kipre all having first-half chances either side of Pilkington’s goal on 20 minutes, which came in the form of a powerful drive from outside the penalty area.
In the second-half, both sides made changes and Macclesfield’s Ben Stevens hit the post in the closest opportunity after the restart.
Chances came for Callum Lang, Charlie Jolley, Leo Da Silva Lopes and Naismith as the second-half wore on but Latics couldn’t extend their lead.
Latics head to Bradford City next weekend before their home double header with Premier League Everton and Burnley precedes the season opener with Cardiff City at the DW Stadium.
