Latics make it three wins from three games as pre-season continues to progress.

  • U23 Pre-Season Report | Derby County 1 Latics 2.
  • Luke Burgess and Scott Smith on target.
  • Latics triumph over Category One academy side to make it three straight wins in pre-season.

Nick Chadwick's Under 23s made it three wins from as many matches in pre-season, with Latics adding to their victories against Curzon Ashton and Southport FC by beating Category One academy side Derby County on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Luke Burgess and Scott Smith, either side of a Derby penalty, secured the victory, with a number of players from Latics' first team fixture against AFC Fylde featuring throughout.

Latics led the way in the first half with some fluid football and opportunities for Olly Crankshaw and a trialist striker, but it was in the second half that all three goals were registered.

Minutes after kick off, Chris Merrie received the ball in midfield, drove into space and played an inch perfect pass for Burgess to run through on goal. The midfielder curled his effort around the Derby keeper from the edge of the area, finishing off his one-v-one with aplomb.

The young Rams equalised from the spot not long after Latics' opener, but midfielder Smith put his side back in front without too much trouble.

Merrie was involved in the build-up again when his midfield movement found Crankshaw out wide. The winger slipped inside to find Smith running into the area, with last year's Under 18 captain using quick feet to work a shooting space for 2-1.
