Baningime 78

A mixture of young professionals, Under 18s and trialists got the perfect first run out of Latics' Under 23 pre-season schedule and capped their performance off with a victory courtesy of Divin Baningime's 78th minute goal against Curzon Ashton of the National League North.

In what was a fairly even game and well-contested 90 minutes, Latics used two separate XIs in each half, with Sam Finley, Adam Long, Chris Merrie, Olly Crankshaw, Victor Maffeo and Luke Burgess used in the first half alongside a number of trialists.

Former Curzon Ashton forward Crankshaw was lively in the first 45 and his trickery brought about two penalty shouts, but it wasn't until Latics switched things up in the second half that they finally made their breakthrough.

Goal scorer Baningime was joined by U18 squad members Ollie Broe and Kyle Joseph, as well as U23 team mates Will McGuffie, Ryan Galvin and Scott Smith, with the remainder of the team made up of trialists.

A fine one-v-one save from Latics' second half trialist goalkeeper kept the score level, before Baningime grabbed the all important goal 12 minutes from time at Christopher Park.

High pressure on the Nash's centre half and goalkeeper forced a loose ball up top, allowing the first year professional to tap home into an open net from close range.

Next up for Latics is the visit of Southport on Tuesday 9 July for a 1.00pm kick off at the Academy.
