In partnership with the EFL Trust and the National Lottery, we are bringing retired and semi-retired people together to meet others, socialise and do the things they enjoy.
- Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Extra-Time Hub – aimed at increasing the amount of activities available to retired and semi-retired people across Wigan – takes place every Tuesday (1pm – 3pm)
- Sessions include quizzes, games, arts and crafts, music, singing, table tennis, badminton, films, stadium tours and more!
- For more information about the Extra Time Hub, please contact Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Extra Time Hub Activator Christine Blundell on email@example.com or call 01942 318090.
Over 55s in the Wigan Borough are encouraged to join Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Extra Time Hub project, which takes place on Tuesdays at the DW Stadium.
Extra Time Hub is funded by the National Lottery and Sport England, with sessions taking place from 1pm and 3pm every Tuesday at the DW Stadium.
The scheme aims to make a positive difference to the lives of retired and semi-retired people and for them to find out about the range of activities on offer in their free time as well as give them the chance to meet and spend time with other like-minded people from the area.
For 68-year old Rosemary Charles, the chance to meet new people and take part in regular weekly activities at the DW Stadium was too good of an opportunity to turn down.
Rosemary says the programme has proved beneficial for a number of older people in the town.
She explained: “The project interested me as soon as I saw it on the club’s website because I’ve been looking for somewhere where I could get more exercise and stay active for a while.
“Obviously with me being older I wanted something a bit more gentle, but I also wanted to meet people so this seemed like an ideal opportunity for me to marry both together.
“One of the biggest problems is loneliness and living on your own, but you come to this project and you have the chance to meet other people who are often in a similar situation.
“It’s very easy to become isolated and stay in your home and not see people when you get older and for some people the only contact they’ll have with others during a day is when they go to the shop or somewhere like that.
“The social interaction isn’t there anymore for a lot of people but at something like this you talk to other people, have a laugh with them and just enjoy yourselves.”
Activities on offer at the DW Stadium will include quizzes, games, arts and crafts, music, singing, table tennis, badminton films, talks, stadium tours and much more, with refreshments also available.
The sessions cost £3, which includes tea and coffee. Participants get their first session FREE and from their second session onwards their £3 fee includes membership, which provides discounts at Costa Coffee, Subway and in Rigalettos.
