Latics’ Development Squad made it five games unbeaten in the Central League following victory against Mansfield Town on Tuesday afternoon.
Goals from Charlie Jolley and trialist Josh Martin saw Nick Chadwick’s side grab all three points at Alfreton Town’s Impact Arena, subsequently extending their unbeaten run away from home to three games.
Chances came few and far between in a difficult test for Latics in the first-half, though, the visitors improved in the second half and got their reward on the hour mark.
Mansfield Town failed to clear their lines from a corner which came to the back post to Jolley who had his back to goal, but the forward managed to find a yard before his deflected effort found the back of the net.
Latics were in control at the Impact Arena and got their second of the game in the 81st minute, Luke Robinson’s inviting free-kick was met by the head of trialist, Martin, who rose above his marker at the near post.
Despite late pressure from the hosts, Latics deservedly grabbed all three points to secure their fourth win in five games in the Central League.
Senior Professional Development Phase Coach, Chadwick, praised his players following an impressive performance on Tuesday afternoon:
“The lads have done really well, the first half wasn’t easy, but I’m happy with how the players adapted and we thoroughly deserved the victory in the end,” he said.
Chadwick also touched on an impressive performance from goal-scorer, Jolley, who scored his side’s first goal in the victory:
“It was a performance which will move Charlie forward, he came up against two big centre halves, but continued to battle against them all game.
“He got his reward in the end with a goal, but we just want to continue developing the good set of young players we have here at Wigan Athletic.
“I’m really happy with the players, the performances have been good and it’s important we start finding that end product just a little bit more, but everyone is working hard to make good impressions at the football club.”
Latics are next in action in the Central League on Tuesday 26 March against Doncaster Rovers.
