Wigan Athletic’s Extra Time Hub project – a programme aimed at increasing the amount of activities available to retired and semi-retired people across Wigan – launched at the DW Stadium earlier this afternoon.

As part of Wigan Athletic’s commitment to becoming a more age-friendly organisation, today's launch brought individuals from various communities together to discuss what activities they would like to do while also giving them the chance to make new friends and meet like-minded people.

Funded by the National Lottery and Sport England and backed by the EFL Trust, the Extra Time Hub aims to make a positive difference to the lives of retired and semi-retired people, with weekly sessions to take place every Tuesday from 3.30pm – 5.30pm at the DW Stadium.

Rosemary Charles, Extra Time Hub member, said: "One of the biggest problems for older people is living on their own and feeling lonely for a variety of reasons, but this programme enables you to get out and meet other people who are in a similar situation so I'm really looking forward to taking part in activities each week."

Staff across the organisation have taken part in Dementia Friends training during the 2018/19 season while the DW Stadium and the Community Trust's Montrose Skills Hub base have been named age-friendly venues by Age UK Wigan Borough.

Tom Flower, Head of Community at Wigan Athletic, said: “We’re really excited to launch the Extra Time programme and hope the DW Stadium will act as a hub for retired and semi-retired people to improve their health and wellbeing, meet new people and reduce social isolation.”

The sessions cost £3 and includes free tea and coffee.
