Latics duo involved as England make five-star start to their UEFA U17 European Championship qualifiers.

  • England U17s won 5-2 against Switzerland in UEFA U17 Elite Round qualifier.
  • Weir featured for the full 90 minutes with Gelhardt a late substitute.

Latics' Under 18 midfielder Jensen Weir featured for the full 90 minutes of an impressive display in England U17s' opening Elite Round qualifier for the UEFA U17 European Championship finals in Ireland this May, a 5-2 victory over Switzerland in Denmark.

Weir, who made his seventh England appearance on Thursday night, was a key cog in the Young Lions' midfield, whilst West Bromwich Albion's Morgan Rogers and Arsenal's Sam Greenwood took the plaudits with a brace apiece. A Switzerland own goal added to England's tally.

Forward Joe Gelhardt was a late substitute and featured for six minutes when he replaced Greenwood, earning his 10 appearance, in which he has six goals.

Steve Cooper's England are back in action on Sunday afternoon against Croatia.
