Players and coaching staff from Wigan Athletic’s Development Squad will grab their sleeping bags and brave the elements for The Brick’s #DWStadiumSleep on Friday 5th April after it was confirmed today that a number of the club's youngsters would support the event.
The Brick – who help people across Wigan facing homelessness, poverty and debt crisis – are hosting the #DWStadiumSleep for a second consecutive year after 120 people took part in last year’s activities to raise vital funds and awareness of the charity’s work.
That number is expected to be doubled this time around, with participants set to swap the comfort of their beds for sleeping bags on the concourse of the East Stand at the DW Stadium.
Latics and The Brick teamed up for a second year in September 2018, with the aim of the partnership to raise £100,000 to buy The Brick Works – a facility which offers training to increase the employment opportunities for unemployed people - on Hodson Street near Wigan town centre, which would secure the charity’s long-term future.
Nick Chadwick, Development Squad coach, said: “I think most people know of family or friends who have fallen on hard times so it’s important for our players, who are in such privileged positions as professional footballers, to help people who are struggling so it’s great that they’re getting involved.
He added: “The links the club has with the community are fantastic and we want our younger players to build relationships and get a feel for the town of Wigan and the community as a whole.”
Chris Merrie, Development Squad captain, said: “This is the first time we’ll have done anything like this so it’ll be good for us as a group to meet everyone taking part, but also to give us that chance to bond as teammates because we’re a new squad. We’re all excited for the event and are just pleased to be able to give something back to The Brick and support their work.”
Participants are encouraged to raise a minimum of £100 for The Brick through fundraising, with the event itself running from 9.30pm – 6am.
Anybody over the age of 13 can take part in the event, but those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Local businesses and community groups are welcome.
