Congratulations to our Academy stars and recent first team league debutants, Joe Gelhardt and Jensen Weir, who have been named in England's 2019 UEFA European U17 Championship squad for the finals in Ireland this month.

The competition begins on Friday 3 May with England facing France, before taking on Netherlands on Monday 6 May and Sweden in their final group stage game on Thursday 9 May.

Gelhardt, 16 and Weir, 17, have been heavily involved in England's preparations for the tournament, with Joe on target in England's crucial 3-2 victory against Denmark to qualify for the tourament in the Elite Round qualifiers, whilst Weir started all three matches to take his appearance tally up to nine for the U17s.

Both made their league debuts for Latics in last weekend's 1-1 draw away at Birmingham City, having featured together from the bench earlier in the season in the Carabao Cup against Rotherham United.

Midfielder Weir was Latics' youngest ever first team player when he made his debut as a 15-year-old in the Checkatrade Trophy back in 2017, whilst Gelhardt was a standout member of Latics' FA Youth Cup run earlier this season with a hat-trick in the fourth round at Hull City.
