When we needed a hero, up popped Hugo Rodallega against Stoke City on this day in 2011.
- On This Day | Stoke City 0 Latics 1 | 22 May 2011.
- Hugo Rodallega's header secured Latics' Premier League status.
- The Colombian's goal sparked unforgettable celebrations at full time.
After the comeback of all comebacks against West Ham United at the DW Stadium the weekend before, Latics arrived at the Britannia Stadium knowing a victory would 100% seal a spot in the Premier League for 2011-12, although, if results were favourable elsewhere, a draw would also have been enough.
Determined to claim their place for themselves, Latics battled hard against a Stoke City side who pushed Roberto Martinez's men to their limit, with shots cleared off the line and the woodwork struck multiple times.
With 12 minutes remaining and the crucial point hanging in the balance, Hugo Rodallega rose to meet Maynor Figueroa's clipped cross, bulging the back of Asmir Begovic's net to provide Martinez and co with that all important goal and Premier League survival.
Owner and chairman Dave Whelan led the celebrations at full time, with Latics safe in the knowledge that a seventh top flight season lay ahead of them.
