Republic of Ireland

Highly-rated Republic of Ireland Under 21 central midfielder signed from Manchester City

Byrne was Latics' eighth and final signing of a busy deadline day in January 2017, arriving on a three-year deal from Manchester City.

He had to bide his time to make his Latics debut, which came as a late substitute in the 3-2 victory over Rotherham United in April. He was given 35 minutes in the following game at home to Barnsley – the Nick Powell 11 minute hat-trick match.

A skilful, quick-footed and technically-gifted player, he will be looking to establish himself with Latics in 2017-18.

Dublin-born Byrne left City after spending eight years with the club following his move at the age of 15 from St Kevin's Boys in his native Dublin.

Capped 20 times by the Republic of Ireland at youth international level, he progressed through the age groups at City’s academy but never played a first team game and chose instead to go on loan in the Dutch Eredivisie with SC Cambuur for the 2015-16 season, where he played 27 games and scored four goals.

Early in the 2016-17 season, he moved on loan to Blackburn Rovers, making his EFL debut on the day of the season against Norwich City and going on to play seven matches at Ewood Park in all competitions, including Rovers’ 3-0 defeat against Latics at the DW Stadium in August 2016.
